David Hawkins,

Vice-President, White Rock Farmers’ Market Society

2014 Mary Hartwell Scholarship Award Ceremony - Sunday 17th August

How time flies!

On Sunday 17th August 2014 at the market, the White Rock Farmers’ Market Society was delighted to host the 2014 Mary Hartwell Scholarship award ceremony with the presentation of a certificate and a payment of $500 to this year’s successful candidates – Sophia Kalil and Jory Charles.

This is the third year for the awards which are dedicated to the memory of my late wife Mary Hartwell – a former director of the society and a passionate advocate for organic food and the various supply chains which represent so much work and so much joy as they all come together at our Sunday market.

Over the last three years, I and my fellow directors at the Society have found great satisfaction in helping the Scholars meet some of their costs in the post-secondary education needed for careers in health, nutrition and/or sustainable agriculture.

By way of summary ….

The 2012 awards went to Lucy Brain, Grace Augustinowicz and Samantha Smith

The 2013 awards went to Peggy Nelson and Jory Charles

The 2014 awards went to Sophia Kalil and Jory Charles

In the context of their developing studies and career moves, we welcome any articles, letters, news or suggestions from the Scholars to be published at our website as a framework for the Mary Hartwell Scholarship awards in the years to come. Over the last three years The White Rock Farmers' Market Annual Scholarship program has awarded almost $10,000 in grants.

I would like to thank my late wife Mary for being such a wonderful role model for the original idea, my fellow directors for agreeing to fund the scholarships, Helen Fathers for her impeccable management skills, vendor members for proposals and, last but not least, all of the candidates over the last three years who put in their applications.

The WRFMS is very proud of the accomplishments of the students and will continue to support the Scholarship program for future years

David Hawkins
