Eric Wirsching

I am a 4th year student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, studying in the BASc Sustainable Agriculture program. I have decided to pursue a minor in Policy Studies along with my study of agriculture.

Why Agriculture? Because it is both the most fundamental, and arguably the most destructive of all human activities. I was born into a world with a disheartening trajectory towards ecological mishap – largely thanks to how humans have decided to practice agriculture post World War II. Without sustainable food systems there cannot be sustainable human societies: it is only by connecting directly to the land and keeping it front of mind in all our activities that we will re-shape our collective future to support life on Earth.

Why Policy Studies? Throughout history and across the planet control of food supplies has been and continues to be used to wield extraordinary social, financial and political power. This is something that is easily overlooked by people who don’t struggle every day to get a meal, or who have not had their land and livelihood sold out from underneath their feet. Analyzing the power dynamics between nations, rural communities, indigenous communities, individual farmers and multinational agribusiness firms will inform how we can build more just food systems for all. Policy can dictate how our food systems operate in so many ways, so for me it is an important aspect of my education. We need systemic changes that will encourage a shift towards ecologically friendly production practices and help all people easily participate and share the rewards of our food systems.

As for my connection to the market, I am completing a paid internship this summer with Close to Home Organics at Glen Valley Organic Farm. I am lucky enough to have been shown what direct market agriculture looks like from former vendors of the White Rock Farmers Market. On Wednesdays I help manage our booth at the Langley Community Farmers Market, one of two markets we are serving. Going to market is the highlight of my week - I love interacting with people. I am especially thrilled to see regular customers that share our values and are committed to supporting our good work! I am realizing how challenging it can be to run a small organic farm and look forward to leaving with a better informed perspective.

I am very privileged to be granted the opportunity to pursue higher education. My time at university has led me down a rewarding path I never imagined I would be on when I began. I am very grateful to those who offer support to students like me so we can continue to pursue a better future for ourselves, the human family and the planet.
