Grant Recipient 2014 - Sophia Kalil

As a Food, Nutrition and Health student at The University of British Columbia interested in community food security, I am very grateful that the Mary Hartwell Scholarship exists to support those of us who strive to improve the wellbeing of our community and its citizens. In my past years as a student, I have learned much about the surrounding issues and necessary processes involved in the pursuit of community food security; a goal that I believe my hometown of White Rock is working towards. With the rising success and popularity of the White Rock Farmers’ Market, White Rock is successfully increasing its community food security by promoting healthy, local and sustainable food choices. My goal once I am graduated as a Nutritionist, is to not only help improve community food security in White Rock but also the health of its citizens by providing holistic, nutritional guidance. The Mary Hartwell scholarship has provided me with much needed financial support to make my studies and future goals possible, and is an award I sincerely appreciate.
