One of my favourite things to do whenever I travel–or in this case, move–is to check out the area farmers’ markets so I can see what is grown, made, and sold by local farmers and artisans. I managed to arrive in Vancouver just as many of the warm-weather markets were wrapping up, but luckily the White Rock Farmers’ Market has just switched into its “winter” mode, which meant a Sunday morning trip to the Elks Hall was in order.

The indoor-outdoor market features about a half dozen produce vendors, a handful of bread and treat sellers, a chicken truck, crafted goods, vinegars, root veggie chips, sausages, teas, and more. The brisk morning air was crisp and pleasant, though it was nice to head indoors for a cup of coffee and a little warmth. Tomato season is fading, but root veggies and winter greens are going strong. A not-too-sweet raspberry scone made for a nice treat, and some savory salted taro and yam chips a snack to open later. Although White Rock is only my temporary stomping grounds, it was nice to shop like a local for the day, and see what beautiful bounty was in season from the region’s farms.

The White Rock Farmers’ Market is Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through December 15 at The Elks Hall at 1469 George Street in White Rock.
